2020 Return to Play Guide

 

As guidelines are released on either state, local, or league level detailing out how Tackle, Flag and Modified Flag Football will resume in the 2020 season, Westport PAL will look to return to play with the below guidelines in place:

 

Safety

·       Masks

o   Cloth masks will not be required for players as it may pose more risk than prevent, for practice and/or game play

o   Coaches, Referee’s, and board members will be required to wear masks during both practices and game play pending league guidelines

 

·       Play Requirements as it relates to physical closeness of players and the length of time that players are close to each other or to staff

o   Coaches and volunteers will be limited to:

§  1 Head Coach

§  2 Offense Coach/Volunteer

§  2 Defense Coach/Volunteer

o   Practices will remain 2 hrs. in length but will be modified to focus on individual skill building versus competition and/or Coaches may put players into small groups (25 or less) that remain together and work through stations, rather than switching groups or mixing groups  

§  Temperatures will be taken by coach upon arrival, before any player can participate – we ask parents to wait to leave premises until a child has been cleared

§  More timeouts will be given to allow for hand hygiene and to clean and disinfect shared equipment inc. mouthguard breaks

o   Game play guidelines have yet to be determined, but will potentially include:

§  Temperatures will be taken by coach upon arrival, before any player can participate – we ask parents to wait to leave premises until a child has been cleared

§  More timeouts will be given to allow for hand hygiene and to clean and disinfect shared equipment inc. mouthguard breaks

§  Coaches will call plays from sideline and will not be allowed on field with exception of 3rd/4th grade coaches, they will stand 6ft. behind the lines

§  Additional Lacrosse balls to allow for more frequent equipment switches and disinfecting of Lacrosse balls

 

·       Ability to engage in social distancing

o   All players must come fully dressed and prepared with their own gear, clearly labeled, including water bottle, mouth guard, etc.

§  Players will be encouraged to keep mouth guards in during all practices/games until designated breaks/timeouts

o   During times when players are not actively participating in practice or game play, attention should be given to maintaining social distancing by increasing space (6 Feet) between players on the sideline or bench.

o   Additionally, coaches will encourage athletes to use downtime for individual skill-building work or cardiovascular conditioning, rather than staying clustered together.

 

·       Nonessential visitors, spectators, volunteers

o   Nonessential visitors, spectators, volunteers, will NOT be allowed at practices

o   Should a parent need to speak with a board member and/or a coach we ask that this is done through email or if in person, a mask must be worn

o   Nonessential visitors, spectators, volunteers, for game time TBD

·       Travel outside of the local community

o   Traveling outside the local surrounding communities has yet to be determined 

·       Players at higher risk of developing serious diseases

o   2020 medical paperwork will also ask for written consent from both parents on the level of risk based on individual players on the team who may be at higher risk for severe illness, such as children who may have asthma, diabetes, or other health problems.

·       Additional waivers

o   Westport PAL will require an additional waiver this season which will include the sign off of high risk participants, along with an agreement that all equipment will be wiped down after each practice and game.
